Main uses of Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate

Feed additive

Copper is the one of the most important dietary supplements for animal and poultry feed-mixes. A deficiency of copper leads to bone weakness, weight loss, decreased milk production, depraved appetite and anemia, while providing a sufficient amount of copper improves animals’ fertility and stimulates growth.
Copper sulfate pentahydrate is by far more preferable source of copper than another copper compounds. Numerous researches show that copper absorption and utilization in the animals reach the highest value when the copper sulfate is used as feed additive.
Feeding the appropriate level of a trace mineralized salt containing a highly available copper source is one of the best nutritional investments a livestock producer can make.

Copper belongs to the group of trace elements required by human and animal body in microscopic amounts for proper growth and development, regular enzymatic activity, creation of bones, collagen and red blood cells. The trace elements group includes along with copper such elements as Iron (Fe), Zinc (Zn), Manganese (Mn), Iodine (I), Cobalt (Co), Vanadium (V), Molybdenum (Mo), Chromium (Cr) and Selenium (Sn).

Water treatment (algaecide)

Copper sulfate pentahydrate effectively destroys algae, since it tends to absorb copper from aqueous solutions, being consequently eradicated. Copper sulfate should be applied at intervals throughout the growing season to water reservoirs to ensure effective algae control.

Fungicide

Traditionally, copper sulfate is widely used in agriculture. It has excellent fungicide, insecticide and antiseptic properties. Traditionally, copper sulfate is the active ingredient in Bordeaux mixture and in Burgundy mixture as well, sprayed for the prevention of plant diseases, primarily at vineyards.

Examples of industrial uses

Copper sulfate is the source of copper for electro or electroless plating. In dyestuffs industry, it is a color stabilizer in various dyes. In mining, copper sulfate is often used as an activating reagent in the flotation of lead, zinc and uranium ores.

There are additional uses for copper sulfate pentahydrate in the chemical, steel, petroleum and other industries.
